Memorial to Brigadier General Lewis Armistead
1817-63, Confederate general, b. New Bern, N.C. He was
commissioned (1839) in the U.S. army from Virginia but resigned
when that state seceded. In the Gettysburg campaign, Armistead,
commanding a brigade under G. E. Pickett in the famous charge,
accomplished the farthest penetration of the Union lines, but he
was mortally wounded. A monument where he fell marks the
"high tide" of the Confederacy.
